INTERDEPOSIT

Third millennium creativity will be world-wide and digital. Works which can now be virtual, non localised and conceived by groups also have facilitated circulation and distribution due to new supports and design techniques. However, digital technologies also create new risks for authors. In the first place, the author loses all control over the exploitation of his work. Indeed, whatever the type of work being protected (sound, image, writing), digitising and communication techniques give any computer user the ability to access, reproduce, represent and even modify the author’s creations without any notification. Before the year 2000, the number of computers will be greater than the number of televisions.

Furthermore, modifications of these works, or their integration into a secondary work, such as in multimedia applications, make it practically impossible to establish proof of an author rights violation. Factors such as the quality of reproduction, ease of alteration and the fusion of existing works with unrelated elements no longer allow the author to locate elements of his own work.

I n order to offer a well adapted response to these problems, the establishment of an international system for the filing and registration of digital works became necessary. This system will allow creators of multimedia who wish to incorporate other author’s works within their own works to identify the owners of copyright and to get exploitation information.

It is to favour creation in multimedia as well as the respect of rights over intellectual property that the INTERDEPOSIT Federation, whose main office is in Geneva, was created.

The Federation’s objectives are as follows :

The INTERDEPOSIT Federation co-operates with international organisations such as WIPO and ISO, and includes to date the following members :

INTERDEPOSIT also has contractual agreements with :
